American Spirit, Drop-Top Style: Signature Autosports Offers A Unique
1972 Ford Mustang Convertible “Olympic Sprint Edition” Tribute
6 May 2025 by Signature Autosports, Castle Hayne, North Carolina
Few vehicles capture the spirit of early 1970s Americana quite like the Ford Mustang Convertible—and this beautifully reimagined 1972 example goes one step further, honoring a rarely-seen slice of history. Finished in Wimbledon White (approximately 12-15 years ago) with light blue metallic rally stripes, red pinstripe accents, and USA shield decals on the rear quarter panels, this drop-top pays tribute to the ultra-rare “Olympic Sprint Edition” Mustangs featured in the 1972 National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade in Washington, D.C.
A Salute to a Rare Mustang Legacy
While Ford officially produced just fifty Sprint convertibles for that year’s festivities, this car has been restored as a faithful homage. Originally delivered to the Washington DSO (District Sales Office - Code 17), it was factory-ordered in Light Blue (Code 3B) with a Medium Blue Corinthian vinyl interior (Code CB)—a striking combination echoed today in its commemorative repaint and patriotic graphics. Every detail—from the commemorative colors to the USA shield decals—echoes the red, white, and blue originals with remarkable precision.
American-Made. Built to Cruise.
Under the hood, this Mustang retains its 351 cubic inch Cleveland® V8 engine, equipped with a two-barrel carburetor and rated at 177 horsepower and 284 lb•ft of torque (SAE net). Paired with Ford’s FMX SelectShift® Cruise-O-Matic® three-speed automatic transmission, it offers confident performance and smooth operation. Power steering and power front disc brakes ensure effortless drivability—this isn’t just a showpiece; it’s built to be enjoyed.
Vintage Appointments, Comfortably Preserved
Inside, the cabin maintains its factory styling and comfort. The bucket seats are upholstered in blue ComfortWeave vinyl, complemented by a center console, Deluxe seatbelts (complete with reminder light), and a working electric clock. The optional SelectAire® air conditioning system keeps things cool, while the AM/FM stereo cassette delivers period-correct entertainment. This convertible strikes a perfect balance between nostalgia and usability.
A Custom Touch with Muscle Car Roots
One of the most distinctive features is the professionally integrated 1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator XR7 taillight conversion—a tasteful, period-inspired cue to Ford’s broader performance heritage. It adds a muscular twist to the car’s rear profile without straying too far from its Mustang identity, giving this tribute a unique signature among its peers.
Low Miles. High Patriotism. Timeless Style.
With just 24,750 miles on the odometer, this Mustang is an exceptional low-mileage example—and a compelling nod to one of the more obscure and fascinating moments in the model’s history. Whether displayed at your local Cars & Coffee, driven in your town's Fourth of July parade, or simply enjoyed on a sunny Sunday, this 1972 Mustang tribute, presented in Grade 3 Condition, embodies the best of classic American motoring—style, presence, and patriotic flair included.
Where Heritage Meets the Highway
Every generation has its icons—and this one wears the stars and stripes with pride. A rare fusion of heritage and horsepower, this Mustang doesn’t just recall a moment in time—it brings it roaring back to life, one cruise at a time.
